The Ahadith [plural of Hadīth] of The Messenger of Allah [Allah bless him] have been preserved with precision and accuracy. Many scholars took the task of memorising and then narrating with precision. 

The pivots of hadīth is an example of that. These are scholars who are the central point [Madār] of mass hadith transmission.

As the blessed religion of Islam started spreading, so did the interest in the noble Ahadith of The Messenger of Allah [Allah bless him]. Hadīth scholars will sit in large gatherings narrating Hadīth to many people. 

This article highlights the 6 Madar and then mentions the Hadīth scholars who authored books of Hadith, based on the Madar’s. Then followed by 6 [other] Hadīth scholars who narrated Ahadith. 

وقال ابن المديني: نظرت فإذا الإسناد يدور على ستة

Ali Ibn Madini [234 AH] states: I investigated and concluded that the Isnad [chain of Hadīth transmission] revolves around 6 [scholars]. 

فلاهل المدينة ابن شهاب الزهري ت (١٢٤) ولاهل مكة عمرو بن دينار ت (١٢٦)، ولاهل البصرة قتادة بن دعامة الدوسي ت (١١٧)، ويحيى بن أبي كثير ت (١٣٢)، ولاهل الكوفة أبو إسحاق السبيعي ت (١٢٧)، وسليمان بن مهران الأعمش ت (١٤٨)

These pivots of Hadith made way for Muhaditheen [experts in Hadith] to compile books on Hadith. 

ثم صار علم هؤلاء الستة إلى أصحاب الاصناف ممن صنف

Then the knowledge of these 6 [pivots] became apparent in the authors of Hadith compilation: 

فلاهل المدينة مالك بن أنس، ومحمد بن إسحاق، ومن أهل مكة عبد الملك بن عبد العزيز بن جريج، وسفيان بن عيينة، ومن أهل البصرة سعيد بن أبي عروبة، وأبو عوانة الوضاح بن خالد، وشعبة بن الحجاج، ومعمر بن راشد، ومن أهل الكوفة سفيان بن سعيد الثوري، ومن أهل الشام عبد الرحمن الاوزاعي، ومن أهل واسط هشيم بن بشير

ثم انتهى علم الاثني عشر إلى ستة:

١- يحيى بن سعيد القطان، ويكنى أبا سعيد، وهو مولى لبني تيم، ومات سنة (١٩٨ هـ) في صفر.

٢- ويحيى بن زكريا بن أبي زائدة، ويكنى أبا سعيد مولى لهمْدان، مات سنة (١٨٢ هـ) .

٣- ووكيع بن الجراح بن مليح بن عدي بن فرس، ويكنى أبا سفيان، مات سنة (١٩٧ هـ) .

٤- وعبد الله بن المبارك، وهو حنظلي، ويكنى أبا عبد الرحمن، ومات سنة (١٨١ هـ) .

٥- وعبد الرحمن بن مهدي الأسدي، ويكنى أبا سعيد، مات سنة (١٩٨ هـ) .

٦- ويحيى بن آدم، ويكنى أبا زكريا، وهو مولى خالد بن عبد الله ابن أسيد – بالظن مني ١ – مات سنة (٢٠٣ هـ «) . ٢

Then the knowledge from these 12 concluded to these 6:
