Verses 1-5

﴿الۤمۤ ۝١ ذَ ٰ⁠لِكَ ٱلۡكِتَـٰبُ لَا رَیۡبَۛ فِیهِۛ هُدࣰى لِّلۡمُتَّقِینَ ۝٢ ٱلَّذِینَ یُؤۡمِنُونَ بِٱلۡغَیۡبِ وَیُقِیمُونَ ٱلصَّلَوٰةَ وَمِمَّا رَزَقۡنَـٰهُمۡ یُنفِقُونَ ۝٣ وَٱلَّذِینَ یُؤۡمِنُونَ بِمَاۤ أُنزِلَ إِلَیۡكَ وَمَاۤ أُنزِلَ مِن قَبۡلِكَ وَبِٱلۡـَٔاخِرَةِ هُمۡ یُوقِنُونَ ۝٤ أُو۟لَـٰۤىِٕكَ عَلَىٰ هُدࣰى مِّن رَّبِّهِمۡۖ وَأُو۟لَـٰۤىِٕكَ هُمُ ٱلۡمُفۡلِحُونَ ۝٥﴾ [البقرة ١-٥]

Alif. Lām. Mīm. This Book has no doubt in it – a guidance for the God-fearing, who believe in the Unseen, and are steadfast in Salāh (prayer), and spend out of what We have provided them; and who believe in what has been revealed to you and what has been revealed before you; and they have faith in the Hereafter. It is these who are guided by their Lord; and it is just these who are successful.

Quranic guidance 2:1-5

1. Strengthening faith in Almighty Allah, his books and his messengers. Also encouragement upon seeking guidance from the Quran.
2. An explanation of Taqwa and its occupiers.
3. Encouraging the believers to adopt the qualities of the people of guidance and success. So that they tread the path [of the righteous] and are guided and successful in the world, as well as the hereafter.

من هداية الآية:
١- تقوية الإيمان بالله تعالى وكتابه ورسوله، الحث على طلب الهداية من الكتاب الكريم.
٢- بيان فضيلة التقوى وأهلها.
الذين يؤمنون بالغيب، ويقيمون الصلاة ومما رزقناهم ينفقون.
والذين يؤمنون بما أنزل إليك، وما أنزل من قبلك وبالآخرة هم يوقنون.
أولئك على هدىً من ربهم، وأولئك هم المفلحون.

دعوة المؤمنين وترغيبهم في الاتصاف بصفات أهل الهداية والفلاح، ليسلكوا سلوكهم فيهتدوا ويفلحوا في دنياهم وأخراهم.

Commentary

يخبر تعالى أن ما أنزله على عبده ورسوله من قرآن يمثل كتاباً فخماً عظيماً لا يحتمل الشك ولا يتطرق إليه احتمال كونه غير وحي الله وكتابه بحال، وذلك لإعجازه، وما يحمله من هدى ونور لأهل الإيمان والتقوى يهتدون بهما الى سبل السلام والسعادة والكمال.

Allah informs [us] that the Quran which he revealed to his messenger is a magnificent and splendid book. It does not contain any doubt and there is no possibility other than it being the revelation of Allah. This is its inimitable nature [a miracle and is impossible to bring anything like it]. 

That which it contains from its divine light and guidance for the people of belief and Taqwa, it guides to the straight path, happiness and perfection. 

The 5 qualities of the Mutaqin

Below are the 5 qualities of the Mutaqin: 

1. Belief in the unseen
2. Establish Prayer
3. Spend from their wealth
4. Belief in all the revelations
5. Firm conviction in the hereafter

The mutaqin are those that believe in the unseen, that which the senses can’t attain. Such as Almighty Allah, Angels, Resurrection, Paradise and Hell. 

They observe the 5 daily prayers at its time, observing its conditions, pillars, recommended and optional acts. 

They also spend from the wealth that Allah has given them to the recipients of Zakah, family, themselves and upon the poor & needy. 

The Mutaqin believe in the divine revelation that was revealed to The Prophet Muhammad [Allah bless him], and this is the Quran and Sunnah. Also believe in the [unaltered] divine books of the past such as the Tawrat, Zaboor and Injeel. 

Finally they have firm belief in the hereafter and the events that will take place, such as reckoning of deeds, rewards and recompensing of the deeds.  

These are the people that will be successful by being admitted into paradise and saved from the fire. 

يؤمنون بالغيب: يصدقون تصديقاً جازماً لكل ما هو غيب لا يدرك بالحواس كالربّ تبارك وتعالى ذاتاً وصفاتٍ والملائكة والبعث، والجنة ونعيمها والنار وعذابها.

ويقيمون الصلاة: يُديمون أداء الصلوات الخمس في أوقاتها مع مراعاة شرائطها وأركانها وسننها ونوافلها الراتبة وغيرها.

ومما رزقناهم ينفقون: من بعض ما آتاهم الله من مال ينفقون وذلك بإخراجهم لزكاة أموالهم وبإنفاقهم على أنفسهم وأزواجهم وأولادهم ووالديهم وتصدقهم على الفقراء والمساكين.

يؤمنون بما أنزل إليك: يصدقون بالوحي الذي أنزل إليك أيها الرسول وهو الكتاب والسنة.

وما أنزل من قبلك: ويصدقون بما أنزل الله تعالى من كتب على الرسل من قبلك كالتوراة والإنجيل والزبور.

وبالآخرة هم يوقنون: وبالحياة في الدار الآخرة وما فيها من حساب وثواب وعقاب هم عالمون متيقنون لا يشكون في شيء من ذلك ولا يرتابون لكامل إيمانهم وعظم اتقائهم.

لإشارة الى أصحاب الهداية الكاملة والإخبار عنهم بأنهم هم المفلحون الجديرون بالفوز الذي هو دخول الجنة بعد النجاة من النار.

Verses 6-7

 ﴿إِنَّ ٱلَّذِینَ كَفَرُوا۟ سَوَاۤءٌ عَلَیۡهِمۡ ءَأَنذَرۡتَهُمۡ أَمۡ لَمۡ تُنذِرۡهُمۡ لَا یُؤۡمِنُونَ ۝٦ خَتَمَ ٱللَّهُ عَلَىٰ قُلُوبِهِمۡ وَعَلَىٰ سَمۡعِهِمۡۖ وَعَلَىٰۤ أَبۡصَـٰرِهِمۡ غِشَـٰوَةࣱۖ وَلَهُمۡ عَذَابٌ عَظِیمࣱ ۝٧﴾ [البقرة ٦-٧]

Surely for those who have disbelieved, it is all the same whether you warn them or you warn them not: they do not believe. Allah has set a seal on their hearts and on their hearing; and on their eyes there is a covering, and for them awaits a mighty punishment.

من هداية الآيتين:

١- بيان سنة الله تعالى في أهل العناد والمكابرة والإصرار بأن يحرمهم الله تعالى الهداية وذلك بتعطيل حواسهم حتى لا ينتفعوا بها فلا يؤمنوا ولا يهتدوا.

٢- التحذير من الإصرار على الكفر والظلم والفساد الموجب للعذاب العظيم.

Quranic guidance 2:6-7

1. An explanation of the Sunnah [way] of Allah with regards to the people of stubbornness and their persistence [on disbelief]. Which is, Allah seals their senses, until they don’t take benefit from them, thus, they don’t believe and are neither guided [to the straight path].
2. A warning that being persistent on disbelief, oppression and causing chaos, results in a painful punishment [in the afterlife].

Commentary

After mentioning the people of faith, piety, guidance and success, Allah then mentions the people of disbelief and misguidance. Allah informs us that due to their incapability of accepting faith, it matters not whether you warn them or not. This is the way of Allah, sealing their hearts until they can not comprehend [the truth], sealing their ears so they can not hear [the truth] and placing a veil over their eyes so they can not see [the truth]. 

لما ذكر أهل الإيمان والتقوى والهداية والفلاح ذكر بعدهم أهل الكفر والضلال والخسران فأخبر بعدم استعدادهم للإيمان حتى استوى إنذارهم وعدمه وذلك لمضي سنة الله فيهم بالطبع على قلوبهم حتى لا تفقه، وعلى آذانهم حتى لا تسمع، ويَجعلِ الغشاوة على أعينهم حتى لا تبصر، وذلك نتيجة مكابرتهم وعنادهم وإصرارهم على الكفر. وبذلك استوجبوا العذاب العظيم فحكم به عليهم. وهذا حكم الله تعالى في أهل العناد والمكابرة والإصرار في كل زمان ومكان.

Verses 8 -10

﴿وَمِنَ ٱلنَّاسِ مَن یَقُولُ ءَامَنَّا بِٱللَّهِ وَبِٱلۡیَوۡمِ ٱلۡـَٔاخِرِ وَمَا هُم بِمُؤۡمِنِینَ ۝٨ یُخَـٰدِعُونَ ٱللَّهَ وَٱلَّذِینَ ءَامَنُوا۟ وَمَا یَخۡدَعُونَ إِلَّاۤ أَنفُسَهُمۡ وَمَا یَشۡعُرُونَ ۝٩ فِی قُلُوبِهِم مَّرَضࣱ فَزَادَهُمُ ٱللَّهُ مَرَضࣰاۖ وَلَهُمۡ عَذَابٌ أَلِیمُۢ بِمَا كَانُوا۟ یَكۡذِبُونَ ۝١٠﴾ [البقرة ٨-١٠]

And among men there are some who say, “We believe in Allah and in the Last Day”, yet they are not believers. hey try to deceive Allah and those who believe, while they are not deceiving anyone except themselves, although they are unaware of it. In their hearts there is a malady, so Allah has made them grow in their malady; and for them there is a grievous punishment, because they have been lying.

التحذير من الكذب والنفاق والخداع، وأن عاقبة الخداع تعود على صاحبها كما أن السيئة لا يتولد عنها إلا سيئة مثلها.

Quranic guidance 2:8-10

• A warning from lying, hypocrisy, deception and that the deception will return to its owner, just as a sin results in another sin.

Commentary

After Allah mentions the believers who have perfect faith, Allah then mentions the disbelievers, then followed by the munafiqeen. They – munafiqeen – are those that believe by tongue [apparent], however they are disbelievers internally. 

لما ذكر تعالى المؤمنين الكاملين في إيمانهم وذكر مقابلهم وهم الكافرون البالغون في الكفر منتهاه ذكر المنافقين وهم المؤمنون في الظاهر الكافرون في الباطن. وهم شر من الكافرين البالغين في الكفر أشده.
