3 Types of Divine Inspiration
This specific verse of the Quran mentions 3 types of divine revelation that came upon the Prophets [Allah bless them all]. In Arabic this is called Wahi [Divine Inspiration]. Imam Ibn Kathir [774 AH] expounds on this verse in his famous book of Tafsir. This resource has been used for this article.
The 3 types of Wahi are stated by Allah in the following verse:
It is not ˹possible˺ for a human being to have Allah communicate with them, except through inspiration, or from behind a veil, or by sending a messenger-angel to reveal whatever He wills by His permission. He is surely Most High, All-Wise. [42:51]
All these 3 types of revelation are in direct connection to Almighty Allah. They are other forms of revelation/inspiration such as true dreams, this will Insha Allah be discussed in another article titled ‘How Wahi came to the Prophet Muhammad’.
Below are the 3 types of Wahi and its brief explanation.
Revelation inspired into the Prophet’s [Allah bless him] heart – ‘except through inspiration’
This is when Allah casts revelation into the heart of the Prophet [Allah bless him] and there is no doubt that it is from Allah. This is explained in a hadith mentioned by Imam Ibn Hiban in his Sahih collection:
Ar-Ruh Al-Qudus (i.e., Jibril) breathed into my heart that no soul will die until its allotted provision and time have expired, so have Taqwa of Allah and keep seeking in a good (and lawful) way.
Direct speech of Allah from behind a veil – ‘from behind a veil’
This method occurred with Musa [Allah bless him], when he expressed his desire to see Allah after he had conversed with Almighty Allah, however this was not granted to him [Allah bless him]. This is stated in the following Quranic verse:
When Moses came at the appointed time and his Lord spoke to him, he asked, “My Lord! Reveal Yourself to me so I may see You.” Allah answered, “You cannot see Me! But look at the mountain. If it remains firm in its place, only then will you see Me.” When his Lord appeared to the mountain, He leveled it to dust and Moses collapsed unconscious. When he recovered, he cried, “Glory be to You! I turn to You in repentance and I am the first of the believers.” [7:143]
In an authentic hadith, The Prophet [Allah bless him] said to Jabir [Allah bless him]:
Allah did not converse with anyone except from behind a veil, however Allah spoke to your father [Adam – Allah bless him] directly. [Sunan Tirmidhi]
Jabir [Allah bless him] father was martyred during the expedition of Uhud, and this [hadith] refers to the life of barzakh and the verse under discussion refers to the worldly life.
Inspiration through an Angel
Allah will convey divine inspiration via Jibrael [Allah bless him] or the other angels, to the Ambiya [Allah bless them all].
Jibrael will come in the following ways:
- Voice only
- Original form
- Human form
This is further elucidated in the following Ahadith:
Narrated ‘Aisha [Allah bless her]:
(the mother of the faithful believers) Al-Harith bin Hisham asked Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) “O Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ)! How is the Divine Inspiration revealed to you?” Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) replied, “Sometimes it is (revealed) like the ringing of a bell, this form of Inspiration is the hardest of all and then this state passes off after I have grasped what is inspired. Sometimes the Angel comes in the form of a man and talks to me and I grasp whatever he says.” [Sahih Bukhari: 2]
Narrated Jabir bin ‘Abdullah Al-Ansari [Allah bless him] (while talking about the period of pause in revelation) reporting the speech of the Prophet:
“While I was walking, all of a sudden I heard a voice from the sky. I looked up and saw the same angel who had visited me at the cave of Hira’ sitting on a chair between the sky and the earth. I got afraid of him and came back home and said, ‘Wrap me (in blankets).’ And then Allah revealed the following Holy Verses (of Quran): ‘O you (i.e. Muhammad)! wrapped up in garments!’ Arise and warn (the people against Allah’s Punishment),… up to ‘and desert the idols.’ (74.1-5) After this the revelation started coming strongly, frequently and regularly.” [Sahih Bukhari: 4]
